Meet The Chetwynd Communication Society & Leo Sabulsky
Shortly after it launched the community-based radio station Peace FM, the Chetwynd Communication Society decided to further promote the town and region through collected printed and recorded media. It started Pine Tree Books in 1998 with just a small handful of titles related to the region or written by local authors. Its mission in doing so was to educate locals about the Peace Region’s past and present, its resources, stories, events and news as well as to promote local authors.
Leo Sabulsky is the manager of the station which includes both Peace FM and CHET TV, also operated by the society. Leo, who is also a CCS board member, says that he, the society and volunteers have been and continue to be proactive in seeking out new book titles to add to Pine Tree Books’ collection. They are passionate about local history and want to not only preserve that history but also make that information available to anyone who wishes to access it. Today, Pine Tree Books’ inventory contains over 900 book titles, and the society is always on the lookout for more for its collection. The store also contains DVDs of documentaries relating to local interest, including every Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Championship ever held.
Leo and society members are proud to be able to offer locals such a comprehensive printed and recorded history of the area. “We love to supply people with local knowledge,” Leo says. Not only that, but through the bookstore, the society is able to keep books of local interest from going out of print and being lost forever. It is also able to give local authors a venue for promoting and selling their books that they might not otherwise have.
Original. Unique. Localized.
Pine Tree Books specializes in local, northern and aboriginal books. Each title in its inventory is related to local or regional topics, stories or information, or has been written by a local author. It includes numerous titles that are unique or hard-to-find anywhere else, including many rare and out-of-print titles. It stocks more than 900 titles and also includes videos/DVDs of local interest and documentaries of local events and people. Pine Tree Books is an offshoot of Peace FM / CHET TV, a community radio and television station focusing on people, events, stories and news of local interest. Its mission is to make historical accounts of the region and its peoples and culture available to all.
